UK Food Price Inflation Set to Surge in Coming Years
British food price inflation is predicted to surge in the coming years, according to the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD). The organization forecasts that average UK food inflation will reach between 2.9% and 3.9% this year, rising to 5.6% to 6.6% in 2027 and 5.3% to 6.3% in 2028.
The IGD's chief economist, James Walton, attributed the expected price increases to Middle East disruption, rising input costs, and extreme weather linked to El Nino. He warned that while current food inflation is low, it will not remain so, citing stock buffers and hedging as temporary measures that have delayed but not removed the pressure building from disrupted energy markets and extreme weather.
Fruit and vegetables are expected to make the largest contribution to higher food inflation due to their shorter production cycles and high sensitivity to weather. The Bank of England is concerned that higher food prices will drive up overall inflation expectations, which can lead to price pressures becoming embedded in the economy.
