UK Growth Distortions Complicate Pound's Future
The UK's economy experienced an unusually strong growth in the first quarter of this year, but experts warn that this may not be sustainable.
According to Commerzbank's Michael Pfister, the country's services sector drove this growth, which came in at 0.4% month-on-month.
This phenomenon is unusual because since 2022, UK quarterly growth rates have shown a seasonal distortion, with exceptionally strong growth observed in the first half of the year and weak growth in the second.
Pfister argues that this trend complicates Bank of England policy signals and limits conclusions from July's robust data. He believes that markets are pricing rate hikes, but lingering uncertainty on underlying momentum creates scope for disappointment and downside risks for the Pound.
