UK Household Borrowing Soars at Fastest Pace Since 1993
UK household borrowing has surged at its fastest annual pace since 1993, according to data from the Bank of England. In August, net unsecured lending to consumers rose by £2.464 billion ($3.26 billion), significantly exceeding economists' forecasts of a £1.9 billion increase.
This is the largest rise in borrowing since monthly records began in 1993 and has sparked concerns about household affordability amid persistently high inflation.
Katie Clinton, head of financial services advisory at KPMG UK, noted that the rise in borrowing comes alongside a two-year high in consumer confidence, driven by a better outlook for personal finances and economic conditions.
