UK Inflation Data Supports BoE Rate Hold

The Bank of England's decision to pause interest rates may have been vindicated by new data from the UK. According to Rabobank, UK inflation matched expectations at 3.1% year-over-year, with higher energy and fuel prices being the main drivers of the increase.

Core Consumer Price Index (CPI) and services CPI remained unchanged, while food CPI also failed to meet expectations. This combination of data points suggests that second-round effects, or subsequent price increases, are contained.

Rabobank's Senior Macro Strategist Bas van Geffen noted that the data support a policy hold at the upcoming Bank of England meeting. The current interest rate is 3.75%, which is already higher than economists' estimates of the UK's neutral rate by around 50 basis points.
