UK Inflation Expectations Plummet Ahead of BoE Rate Decision
The UK's inflation expectations have cooled down ahead of the Bank of England's interest rate decision. According to a Citi/YouGov survey, one-year-ahead inflation expectations fell to 3.4%, down from 3.8% in June, while long-term expectations declined to 3.7% from 3.9%. These numbers are significant because they can influence the Bank of England's monetary policy decisions.
The survey results show that households are becoming less worried about inflation, which could reduce the risk of a wage-price spiral taking hold. This shift in sentiment is particularly notable as it comes ahead of the Bank of England's interest rate decision on July 30 or 31. Markets widely expect the central bank to hold rates steady.
The cooling trend in inflation expectations may also be reflected in UK firms' plans for smaller price and wage increases going forward, according to a separate survey. This could indicate that households are starting to look through energy volatility caused by geopolitical tensions, particularly related to the Iran conflict.
