UK Inflation Expectations Rise to 4.5%, Testing BoE's Next Rate Call
A recent survey conducted by Citi and YouGov has shown that UK inflation expectations have risen to 4.5% for the next year, up from 3.9% in August.
This increase is significant because it can become self-fulfilling: if households expect faster price rises, they may ask for bigger pay increases, and firms may feel more comfortable passing costs on.
The Bank of England (BoE) watches inflation expectations closely as a gauge of future price pressures. Policymakers are trying to determine whether higher energy bills will lead to broader price increases or remain a one-off shock.
Citi noted that there is a wide split between households and businesses, with household survey respondents expecting year-ahead inflation to be 86 basis points above the BoE's Decision Maker Panel of businesses as of August. Historically, this gap has been around 16 basis points.
