UK Inflation Hits 3.1% Amid Global Tensions
UK inflation has reached its highest level in years at 3.1%, surpassing the Bank of England's target rate of 2%. This increase is largely due to global events, including the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and recent attacks on Saudi Arabian energy facilities.
The result is a sharp rise in fuel prices, with petrol averaging 161.3p per litre in August, the highest ever recorded since November 2022.
According to Susannah Streeter, Chief Investment Strategist for the Wealth Club, this situation raises concerns about future inflation rates and energy costs.
The Bank of England is expected to address interest rates on Thursday, as markets anticipate multiple hikes due to the energy shock's impact on inflation. This could lead to increased borrowing costs and a fresh squeeze on spending for consumers.
