UK Inflation Hits 3.1% as Fuel Prices Continue to Soar
UK inflation accelerated to 3.1% in August due to rising fuel prices, according to official data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This marks a 0.2 percentage point increase from the previous month's 2.9%. The conflict in the Middle East continues to exert upward pressure on fuel costs.
The Bank of England is expected to maintain its benchmark interest rate at 3.75% on Thursday, despite the UK economy struggling with growth. Analysts predict inflation will rise towards the end of the year as higher energy costs feed through to bills further.
Richard Carter, head of fixed interest research at Quilter Cheviot, stated that 'with the situation in the Middle East looking increasingly fraught, the expectation is that inflation will continue to climb higher until the end of the year at a minimum.'
