UK Inflation Hits 3.1% as Transport Costs Soar
UK inflation has risen to its highest level in five months, reaching 3.1% in August, according to the latest figures from TradingView. This marks a 0.2 percentage point increase from July's 2.9%. The main driver of this rise was transport costs, with transport inflation surging to 4.6% from 3.6%, as motor fuel inflation jumped to 23% from 15.5%. Petrol prices reached 161.3 pence per liter, while diesel prices rose to 181.8 pence per liter.
The core CPI inflation rate held steady at 2.6%, but goods inflation increased to 2.7% from 2.2%. Services inflation remained unchanged at 3.4%. These figures suggest that the UK's economy is feeling pressure from rising fuel costs, which could have implications for consumer spending and economic growth.
The latest inflation data has matched market expectations, but it remains to be seen how this will impact monetary policy decisions in the coming months. The Bank of England may need to reassess its interest rate strategy in light of these new figures.
