UK Inflation Hits 3.1%, Raising Pressure on Bank of England
The Bank of England is facing a tough decision as inflation rose to 3.1% in August, further limiting its options for setting interest rates.
The rise was largely driven by increasing fuel prices, with other prices remaining relatively stable.
This has sparked concern among economists, with some predicting that the Bank of England may hike interest rates as early as November to guard against the upside risk of inflation.
Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell, noted that motorists are already feeling the pinch, with petrol costs hitting highs not seen since November 2022.
In contrast, some experts believe that the Bank of England can 'look through' a temporary global inflation shock and resist market pricing for interest rate hikes this year.
