UK Inflation Hits 5-Month High Amid Fuel Price Increases
UK inflation has reached its highest level in five months, increasing pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates. The consumer prices index rose to 3.1% in August from 2.9% the previous month, a significant jump driven by higher fuel and airfare prices.
The Office for National Statistics attributed the increase to rising costs at the pump and for flights. This development moves inflation further away from the Bank of England's 2% target.
Despite this upward trend, rate-setters are expected to keep the main interest rate at 3.75% when they meet on Thursday. A majority of the nine-member Monetary Policy Committee seems hesitant to raise rates yet, preferring to see if higher prices will translate into increased wages and further inflationary pressures.
Suren Thiru, chief economist at ICAEW, noted that a cooling jobs market is currently keeping wage demands in check. However, he believes this increase will likely harden the Bank's hawkish tone and leave the door open to higher rates later in the year.
