UK Inflation Hits 5-Month High Amid Transport Costs
UK inflation accelerated in August to its highest level in five months, reaching 3.1% year-on-year, matching market expectations. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increase was driven by higher transport costs, particularly motor fuel prices, which rose 0.5% in August compared to a 0.3% rise in July.
The underlying price pressures remained stable, with core CPI remaining at 2.6%, unchanged from July. Services inflation also remained unchanged at 3.4%, suggesting that the August rise in headline inflation was driven by specific components rather than a broad acceleration across the economy.
Producer-price data pointed to continued cost pressures, with raw material prices rising 6.1% annually in August and factory-gate prices increasing 3.7%. Higher energy prices could eventually feed into consumer prices if businesses pass them on to customers.
