UK Inflation Hits Five-Month High as Fuel Prices Soar
The UK's inflation rate has surged to a five-month high of 3.1% in August, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The increase is largely due to higher fuel prices and airfares, which have pushed up the cost-of-living for Britons.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham acknowledged that the economy faces challenges but stressed that the government will not take risks with people's living standards. He emphasized that difficult decisions would be made in the Budget next month to ensure the economy remains on track.
The ONS data shows that Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation increased from 2.9% in July to 3.1% last month, moving further away from the Bank of England's 2% target. Many economists predict that interest rates will be hiked in future months as inflation is expected to continue rising.
Households are also bracing for another rise in energy bills from next month, adding pressure on consumer finances ahead of the autumn Budget. Experts at Cornwall Insight forecast a 4% increase to bills from October 1, with an even sharper rise predicted in January.
