UK Inflation Surges to Five-Month High, Fueling Rate Hike Expectations
UK inflation has reached a five-month high of 3.1% in August, exceeding expectations and putting pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates.
The increase, which is largely attributed to rising fuel prices and airfares, takes inflation further away from the central bank's 2% target.
Despite this, rate-setters are unlikely to hike interest rates immediately, as a soft labor market has kept wage demands in check, giving them pause for thought.
Suren Thiru, chief economist at ICAEW, noted that 'August's inflation increase is unlikely to trigger a rate hike tomorrow', but added that it will likely harden the Bank's hawkish tone and leave the door open to higher rates later this year.
