UK Inflation Surges to Five-Month High on Fuel Price Hikes
Inflation in the UK has reached a five-month high, driven by rising fuel prices and airfares. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rate increased to 3.1% in August, up from 2.9% in July, according to official data from the Office for National Statistics.
The surge in fuel costs was significant, with petrol prices rising by 9.1 pence per litre and diesel prices increasing by 14.2 pence per litre between July and August. The war in the Middle East has been cited as a contributing factor to the increase in oil and gas prices.
Economists predict that inflation will continue to rise over the coming months, with some forecasting a peak of almost 4% in early 2027 before gradually dropping back to 2% by 2028. The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at its next meeting.
