UK Inflation Threatened by US Diesel Export Ban
The US ban on diesel exports is causing concern in the UK, where economists warn that it could push British inflation to nearly 5 per cent. Average pump prices have topped £2 per litre ($2.7) for the first time, and forecasters say a prolonged ban could drive prices to £3. This would add as much as one percentage point to UK inflation, according to multiple reports.
The US administration has hinted at an export ban unless European nations release stockpiles to control prices. The UK is heavily reliant on imports, making it vulnerable to disruptions in the global diesel market.
Thomas Pugh, chief economist at RSM UK, estimates that a prolonged US diesel ban could push UK inflation by 0.5 per cent, including indirect effects from price surges filtering down supply chains to consumers rapidly.
