While fixed savings deals in the UK are hitting two-year highs, instant-access savings rates remain stagnant. Data from Moneyfacts shows the average instant-access rate has been frozen at 2.53% AER since July 2026, with top deals struggling to exceed 5%. In contrast, fixed-rate bonds have surged to as high as 5.37% AER.
The stagnation in instant-access rates can be attributed to several factors. Savings rates typically follow the Bank of England’s (BoE) base rate, which has been steady at 3.75% since December 2025. However, competition between providers and demand for particular accounts also play a role. Uncertainty is another key factor, as banks and building societies prefer fixed-term bonds, which offer more predictable cash flow management.
Looking ahead, instant-access rates may change on November 5, when the BoE makes its next rate decision. Inflation has recently jumped to 3.5%, which could prompt a base rate hike. However, Rachel Springall, finance expert at Moneyfacts, advises savers not to wait for potential rate changes. She emphasizes the importance of regularly reviewing accounts and switching providers to secure better returns.
Currently, the best instant-access deals come from lesser-known brands like Cahoot, Tembo, and Ford Money. These challenger banks and platforms often offer higher rates due to lower overheads. For those willing to navigate certain restrictions, there are even better variable-rate deals available, though they may come with withdrawal limits, exclusivity for existing customers, or notice periods.
