UK Lawmakers Review Bank of England's Monetary Policy Framework Amid Inflation Concerns
The Bank of England's monetary policy framework is under review by UK lawmakers, who are questioning whether its 30-year-old remit remains fit for purpose. The Treasury committee has launched an inquiry into the central bank's record on price stability and inflation management.
MPs are scrutinizing the Bank's handling of quantitative tightening, as well as its implementation of the Bernanke review recommendations. They also want to assess whether the current system is working in a period of repeated economic shocks and structurally higher public debt.
Meg Hillier, chair of the committee, said that the UK and the wider world have changed significantly since the Bank gained operational independence over interest rates. She emphasized that it's healthy to review the central bank's remit to ensure it remains suited to current conditions.
