UK Politicians Push Cooperative Model for Failing Water Companies
Labour MPs and regional mayors in the UK have proposed converting failing water companies into not-for-profit cooperatives to address environmental failures and mounting debt.
The proposal, supported by figures close to Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, aims to establish public control over struggling providers without relying on taxpayer funding.
Under the proposed framework, failing water firms would enter a special administration regime featuring a Bank of England-style bail-in mechanism that forces shareholders and creditors to absorb financial losses.
The plan also recommends enforcing stricter regulatory oversight across the water sector, including dividend bans for underperforming companies and caps on executive compensation.
