UK Retail Sales Surprise with August Rebound
UK retail sales rebounded in August, surprising economists who expected a decline. The Office for National Statistics reported that total spending rose 1.3% and volumes increased by 0.5%. This growth is significant, especially considering the sharp fuel split, where motorists spent more on less fuel due to higher prices.
The online sector saw a resurgence in August, with online spending rising 2.5% after a 4.2% drop in July. The national total share of retail spending attributed to online channels increased to 28.8%. This mix of results makes it difficult for investors to read the signal for any one retailer.
The Bank of England's interest rate decision is still pending, and this release adds complexity to the argument. While consumer-price inflation stands at 3.1%, another solid demand reading gives the majority less reason to hurry toward a cut. The next rate decision is due on November 5th.
