UniCredit Takes Final Lap Towards Commerzbank Acquisition
The takeover of Commerzbank by UniCredit is nearing its final stages, with Germany's federal government no longer signaling resistance to the Italian lender's consolidation plans. According to market reports, the government's 13 percent holding in Commerzbank is now viewed as a marginal position rather than a strategic asset.
This shift in perception has hardened into the most probable baseline scenario: a complete acquisition by UniCredit. Andrea Orcel, UniCredit's chief executive, has been putting pressure on Commerzbank's management and policymakers to clear the path for the takeover.
The regulatory clock is ticking towards autumn, with the European Central Bank expected to give its final sign-off in September or October. UniCredit currently holds around 48 percent of Commerzbank, and the full takeover attempt is valued at €43 billion.
