Unifor Seeks Federal Intervention as Stellantis Considers Brampton Plant Sale
The union representing Canadian workers at Stellantis has urged the federal government to intervene in the sale of its idled Brampton, Ont., assembly plant. In a letter to Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, Unifor national president Lana Payne warned that if the company is successful in selling the facility to Roshel, it would leave over 2,000 employees out of work and affect suppliers employing thousands nearby.
Payne said there is no comparable economic replacement for this work, and Canada's economy will be worse off as a result. She called on the federal government to do everything possible to prevent this outcome.
The Brampton plant has been idled since 2023 when Stellantis halted operations. Last month, the union received notice that the company was considering its closure and sale. The facility had been slated for retooling for Jeep production but was paused in early 2025 after the company moved production of the Jeep Compass to the U.S.
Industry Minister Joly encouraged Unifor and Stellantis to continue negotiations, which she acknowledged have been difficult and bumpy. She said that if there is a potential sale of the plant to another company, Ottawa will ensure that Canadian workers are protected.
