UniMed Sees Stable Outlook as Underwriting Trends Improve
New Zealand-based health insurer UniMed has seen its outlook revised to stable by credit rating agency AM Best. The revision reflects improved underwriting trends and reduced balance sheet pressure after two consecutive years of operating losses in fiscal 2024 and 2025.
The losses were caused by high claim inflation in New Zealand, but recent portfolio remediation efforts have reversed this trend. UniMed has implemented premium rate increases, which has led to an improved operating performance.
AM Best also noted that UniMed's balance sheet strength is underpinned by the strongest level of risk-adjusted capitalisation and above-peer solvency. The insurer's investments in technology and marketing are expected to drive accelerated growth and customer retention.
