US Auto Tariffs Loom Over Canadian Dollar
The Canadian Dollar may face challenges due to rising US auto tariffs, according to Commerzbank's Michael Pfister. The effective tariff increase from 25% to 50% will impact a greater proportion of Canadian exports to the US than previous tariffs.
Pfister notes that without USMCA protection, the tariff increase could be more significant, but even with protection, there would still be difficulties. He emphasizes that prevailing sentiment is more important than the tariff increase itself and can have a substantial impact on Canada's real economy.
The new tariffs were announced well ahead of their implementation in 2027, which might allow for negotiations before year-end. Pfister suggests this could lead to an agreement between the US and Canada by the end of the year.
