US Destinations Launch Promotional Campaigns to Win Back Canadian Tourists Amid Tariff War
As tensions between the US and Canada continue to rise due to President Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods, destinations across America are launching promotional campaigns to win back Canadian tourists. According to a report from Statistics Canada, Canadian visitation to the US in early 2026 remained at levels similar to late 2025, indicating a persistent shift away from the United States by Canadian residents in their travel preferences.
Before the White House announced 50% tariffs on Canadian goods and Canada retaliated with tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of goods, a Longwoods International tracking study found that a slight majority (51%) of Canadians had no intention to travel to the US in the next year. In 2025, four million fewer Canadian travelers visited the US than the previous year, a 22% drop, according to the U.S. Commerce Department's National Travel and Tourism Office.
New York State has launched a 'NY Loves Canada' campaign, offering Canadian-specific discounts at hotels, restaurants, and attractions across the state, with some promotions running through December. Vermont's '100% Love for Canada' promotion includes discounts of up to 50% on hotels, restaurants, attractions, ski lift tickets, and more.
Las Vegas is also trying to attract Canadians back with its 'Vegas on Par' currency-exchange promotion, which lets Canadians receive $1 US of value for every $1 CAD spent at several downtown hotels. Myrtle Beach is offering Canadians hotel discounts of up to 50% through the end of the year.
Brand USA will bring a four-day trade event to Canada in late October to re-engage with 'one of the United States' most important international source markets'.
