US Dollar Falls Amid Unexpected Decline in Consumer Confidence
The US dollar index (DXY) fell by -0.04% today after reaching a one-month high, following an unexpected decline in July consumer confidence.
According to the Conference Board's data, the July consumer confidence index dropped by -1.4 points to 90.8, lower than expectations of a rise to 92.4. This decrease is likely to prompt the Federal Reserve to consider easier monetary policy, which would be negative for the dollar.
The decline in the dollar was limited due to some mild short covering ahead of the two-day FOMC meeting that begins today. The dollar also gained support from safe-haven demand amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
