US Dollar Slumps Despite Treasury Secretary's Bond Purchase Announcement
The US dollar has slumped in value but interest rates remain relatively unchanged following US Treasury Secretary Bessent's announcement to double down on bond purchases. The decision aims to address higher borrowing costs, with a quarterly buyback figure of $32 billion proposed.
However, the market appears unimpressed by this move, with investors continuing to purchase foreign assets despite the intervention. In fact, Japanese investors have bought over $36.5 billion in foreign assets in the first two weeks of August alone.
The dollar's decline has been evident across various currency pairs, including a marginal new high for the euro against the greenback at almost $1.3660 and a six-month low for the Canadian dollar against the US dollar near CAD 1.3755.
