US Dollar Strength Ignites Expectations of Further Fed Tightening
The US dollar has shown remarkable resilience in recent times, defying expectations that weaker-than-expected job openings and consumer confidence data would dent its rally. Instead, rising expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening and a bond market selloff have continued to support the greenback.
This trend is not limited to the US, with the Australian dollar coming under pressure despite a 25-basis-point rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). Fawad Razaqzada, StoneX Media Market Analyst, noted that the AUD/USD pair has been influenced more by shifting Federal Reserve expectations than the RBA's own decision.
The resilience of the US dollar is a key indicator of how much Fed tightening remains in play. As Razaqzada pointed out, 'the bond market selloff is also providing the greenback an additional boost'. This suggests that markets expect the Federal Reserve to continue its tightening efforts, which has been driving up expectations and supporting the US dollar.
