US Escalates Trade War with Canada Amid Tensions Over Tariffs and Import Bans

The Trump administration has intensified its trade war against Canada by imposing new tariffs on over 100 Canadian products, including cheese, steel, paper, and boats. The 50% tariffs will affect goods worth approximately $20 billion, with a list of exempted items that includes toilet paper, cement, road salt, certain fishing equipment, and whiskey in containers larger than four liters.

Additionally, the US has announced direct import bans on Canadian alcoholic beverages, certain dairy products, such as whey and cane molasses, mopeds, and motorcycles with engines larger than 800 cubic centimeters. These measures will take effect on September 29, adding to the strain on Canada's economy.

Canada had already imposed countertariffs of up to 50% on nearly $27.6 billion worth of US products in response to previous tariffs. The trade dispute has cast doubt on the viability of the current framework of the North American Trade Agreement (T-MEC) and fueled debate over a possible reorientation of Canadian trade policy.
