US Fed Set for 25 BPS Rate Hike Despite Trump's Opposition
US Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points, despite President Donald Trump's desire for a cut or no change. The decision comes as inflation has risen to 3.7% in July, exceeding the target of 2%. This rate hike is seen as necessary to curb inflationary tendencies and restore faith in the 2% target.
Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG, noted that a hike now could lower long-term rates later, but failing to raise rates could lead to higher mortgage rates, business borrowing costs, and interest on debt. The US Fed has been expected to hike three times this year, with more increases in December and March.
A rate hike is also expected to strengthen the US dollar, making US investments more attractive to global buyers. This could have a negative impact on the Indian rupee and stock market, as foreign investors may pull out their investments further.
