US Imposes Import Bans on Canadian Booze and Goods Amid Escalating Trade War

U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war against Canada escalated on Tuesday as import bans took effect, blocking shipments of Canadian-made booze, dairy byproducts, and some motorcycles.

The U.S. government imposed tariffs on about three dozen different alcohol products, including beer, wine, and spirits such as whiskies, vodka, and gin. The ban also applies to whey products, non-alcoholic beer, and certain types of molasses.

Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc dismissed Trump's claim that Canada would apologize for standing up for its workers and businesses in order to make a deal. 'I'm not thinking the government of Canada is going to apologize for standing up for Canadian workers, Canadian businesses, defending our economy,' he said.

The trade restrictions are expected to cover US$967 million worth of Canadian imports, with 87% being alcoholic beverages targeted by the U.S.
