US Inflation Hits 3.7% as Consumer Spending Stagnates
The US inflation rate remains high, putting pressure on the Federal Reserve as consumer spending stagnates. The Commerce Department's latest report shows that the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index rose by 3.7% in July compared to the previous year, matching the increase seen in June.
This persistent rise in prices is a concern for many American households struggling with higher costs. The situation has been compounded by ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in Iran, which has kept fuel prices elevated.
Despite some fluctuations in gas prices, overall inflation has been driven by a rise in the cost of services, including healthcare and utilities. Core inflation remained flat at 3.3% in July.
