US Inflation Hits New Heights Amid Ongoing Middle East Tensions
The US economy is facing numerous challenges as inflation continues to rise. The Labor Department reported that consumer prices increased by 3.4% in August compared to last year, with a monthly increase of 0.4%. This marks the eighth consecutive month of inflation above 3% and highlights the affordability struggles faced by many Americans.
The main driver of this inflation is the surge in gas prices, which has reached an average of $6.05 per gallon. Diesel prices have also hit a record high of over $6 per gallon. These rising fuel costs have significant implications for businesses, as diesel is used extensively in freight and delivery networks.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) showed that wholesale inflation increased by 5.4% in August from the same period last year, indicating that prices are still elevated. This news comes as President Trump's administration faces criticism over its handling of the economy, particularly regarding trade policies and their impact on costs.
The housing market is also experiencing difficulties due to rising mortgage rates. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate has increased to 6.76%, making it more expensive for borrowers to secure a home loan. This development has led to a decline in existing home sales, which fell by 2% in August and are now at their slowest pace in over a year.
