US-Japan Currency Intervention Bolsters Yen Against Weakness

A joint US-Japan currency intervention has taken place for the first time in 15 years, aiming to bolster the yen against its recent weakness. The coordinated effort saw Japan spend $70 billion in late April and early May to prop up the currency, which had fallen to a 40-year low of 163.99 per dollar in July.

The intervention triggered a squeeze in short positions - the largest in nearly two years - increasing the risk of follow-up action, including faster rate hikes from the Bank of Japan (BOJ). 'A surprise hike by the BOJ would go a long way to reset expectations around the central bank's determination to tighten monetary policy,' said Fred Neumann, chief Asia economist at HSBC.

Analysts are divided on whether the intervention will be effective in keeping speculators at bay. While some argue that coordinated intervention packs a punch and tends to be successful, others remain skeptical of its long-term durability unless there is follow-up from policymakers. The BOJ's cautious approach to raising rates has been attributed as one of the main drivers of the yen's weakness.
