US Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Fall Amid Labor Market Volatility
The US jobless claims unexpectedly fell last week, but experts warn that this decline might overstate the health of the labor market. According to the Labour Department, initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped by 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 196,000 for the week ended September 12.
Economists had forecasted 208,000 claims for the latest week, so this decline was a surprise. However, the drop might be due to volatility around last week's Labour Day holiday, which made it difficult to adjust for seasonal fluctuations.
The underlying trend remains consistent with a labor market that has regained its poise after wobbling through much of summer. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since July 2023 and flagged further increases in borrowing costs in the months ahead, citing the labor market as one sign of strength.
