The US labour market reported an unexpected boost in August, with nonfarm payroll jobs increasing by 162,000. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 per cent, according to official data released on September 4, 2026.
Manufacturing employment showed a significant increase, with 16,000 new jobs added in August, bringing the total up from a recent low of 58,000 in December 2025. The machinery manufacturing and fabricated metal product manufacturing sectors both saw gains, adding 6,000 jobs each.
