US Producer Price Inflation Rises 0.4% in August, Fuelling Hawkish Fed Expectations
The US Producer Price Index (PPI) inflation data for August is in line with market expectations, showing a 0.4% month-over-month increase.
This marks an uptick from the previous 0.1%, but core PPI growth fell short of forecasts at 0.2% m/m compared to the anticipated 0.3%.
Ahead of the data release, analysts predicted a 5.4% year-over-year (y/y) increase in PPI, which is exactly what was reported. Core PPI also matched expectations with a 4.6% y/y rise.
The persistently high inflation rates are being seen as a sign of ongoing cost pressures within the economy, potentially leading to higher interest rates and a stronger US dollar.
