US Producer Prices Cool in July as Energy Costs Retreat

The U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 4.7% in July compared to the same month last year, marking a slowdown from June's 5.5% increase. The Labor Department reported that prices for final-demand energy fell by 3.1% from June, contributing significantly to the easing of wholesale inflation pressures.

The decline in energy costs helped offset price increases elsewhere in the economy. While prices for goods declined 0.7%, services prices increased by 0.2%. The stable monthly reading and retreat in energy prices suggest that inflationary pressure may be losing momentum.

The latest producer-price data could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. With moderating consumer inflation and a weaker labor market, the softer PPI reading has reduced expectations for another interest-rate increase in September.
