US Rate Hike Threatens Naira as Investors Favour Dollar Assets
The US Federal Reserve's latest interest rate hike has put pressure on the naira as investors reassess emerging-market assets and consider moving more money into dollar-denominated investments. The Fed raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to a range of 3.75 per cent to four per cent, its first rate increase since 2023.
This decision is expected to affect Nigeria, as the country's economy is heavily reliant on foreign capital inflows. When US interest rates rise, investments like US Treasury securities become more attractive due to higher returns and lower risk, making emerging-market investments less appealing by comparison.
Nigeria faces the risk of reduced foreign investor exposure to naira-denominated assets and increased demand for dollars, which could put additional pressure on the naira in the foreign exchange market. However, the effect is not automatic as investors consider various factors before moving their money.
