The US stock market experienced a conservative trading session on Wednesday, as investors grappled with mixed sentiment stemming from growing oil prices and changing expectations of the Federal Reserve's next move. The Dow Jones lost 168.87 points or 0.31%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.60% to 26,444.72.

The S&P 500 index decreased by 0.30% to 7,730.00, as market participants awaited inflation readings. The Consumer Price Index for July is set to be released on Thursday, with a softer-than-expected reading potentially reviving hopes for easier Fed policy.

Crude oil prices remained high, hovering near $82 per barrel, amid uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. This has resurfaced fears of rising oil prices leading to lower growth in the battle against inflation by the Fed.
