US Stocks Slide on Warsh Hawksish Remarks and Rising Oil Prices

The US stock market experienced losses on Monday due to rising oil prices and hawkish comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. The main indices, including the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite, fell in response to increased inflation fears.

Warsh's remarks at the Jackson Hole symposium last week mentioned that policymakers may need to increase borrowing costs if inflation does not ease to the central bank's 2 percent target. This has led traders to anticipate a rate hike at the US Federal Reserve's meeting next month, with over a 60 percent chance of a hike according to CME's FedWatch.

The military clashes between the United States and Iran in the Middle East have also contributed to higher oil prices, with Brent crude increasing by 1.04 percent. Energy stocks were up due to this rise, while other sectors such as utilities fell after an amendment to a Senate bill in California did little to alter the exposure of grid operators to wildfire liabilities.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 346.30 points or 0.65 percent, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also experienced losses. Despite this, the benchmark S&P 500 was on track to snap two consecutive months of decline, with Thomas Kikis from Standard Chartered commenting that 'the dynamism of the US economy and the corporate sector is incredible'. The Dow, however, was headed for a fifth consecutive monthly gain.
