US Treasury Secretary Defends Nominal Yen Intervention for Export Boost

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the US's intervention in Japan's currency market was minimal, aiming to support American exports. During a House Financial Services Committee hearing on September 15, 2026, Bessent defended the operation as being in America's interests.

'A stronger yen is better for American exports,' Bessent said. He explained that a stronger yen would prevent Japan from having to sell US assets to finance its foreign currency intervention.
