US Treasury Yields Reach Multi-Year Highs Amidst Inflation Concerns
US Treasury yields remain near multi-year highs as investors demand higher returns on government debt amidst persistent inflation, elevated oil prices, and hawkish Federal Reserve signals.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield held steady at around 5.17%, after reaching its highest level since 2007 at about 5.22% on Thursday.
Federal Reserve officials have signaled that additional rate increases may be necessary to combat inflation, which remains above the central bank's target of 2%. The Fed's preferred inflation gauge was running at 3.7% year-over-year in July.
The rise in long-term yields also reflects concerns about inflation risks, fiscal pressures, and the supply of Treasury securities, making a Fed rate hike alone insufficient to explain the current bond selloff.
