USD/CAD Range-Bound Ahead of Key Employment Data

The USD/CAD currency pair traded near its highs of around 1.4020 on Friday, experiencing only modest gains as investors adopted a cautious stance before closely watched employment reports from both the United States and Canada were released.

The US Dollar continued to benefit from safe-haven demand due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz remaining a key concern. Iran's parliament reviewed a proposal that could limit the movement of US and Israeli vessels while maintaining restrictions on the strategically important shipping corridor, raising worries about disruptions to global trade, higher transportation costs, and renewed inflationary pressures.

Elevated US Treasury yields also supported the greenback as investors reassessed the likelihood that the Federal Reserve would maintain a restrictive monetary policy for an extended period. Recent comments from several Fed officials reinforced expectations that interest rates may stay higher for longer if inflation proves persistent, strengthening the Dollar despite mixed economic signals.

The market's attention is now focused on the US July Nonfarm Payrolls report, which is expected to show the addition of 80,000 new jobs after June's increase of 57,000. The unemployment rate is projected to remain unchanged at 4.2%, while annual wage growth, measured by Average Hourly Earnings, is forecast to hold steady at 3.5%. A stronger or weaker-than-expected report could significantly influence expectations for future Fed policy and generate heightened volatility in USD/CAD.

On the Canadian side, higher crude oil prices continue to provide underlying support for the Canadian Dollar, given Canada's status as a major energy exporter. However, this positive impact has been outweighed by ongoing US Dollar resilience, leaving the currency pair close to recent highs.
