USD/JPY Sees Unusual Yen Surge Amid Rising US Yields
The Japanese yen has experienced an unusual surge despite rising US yields, a phenomenon that challenges traditional relationships between the two currencies. Over the past few weeks, the yen has gained 3.7% against the US dollar, with some of this movement attributed to short covering among speculators and aggressive BOJ repricing.
Apart from these factors, there are concerns about Japan's fiscal position, particularly with regards to its consumption tax and defence spending. These issues have added pressure on Japanese long-end yields, which has helped to narrow the yield disadvantage that traditionally works against the yen.
Looking ahead, the Fed and BOJ interest rate decisions this week will be crucial in determining directional risk for USD/JPY. The markets are expecting a 25 basis point hike from both central banks, but it is the guidance around their future moves that may matter more than the decision itself.
