USD/JPY Tumbles on BOJ Hawk Comments

The USD/JPY pair broke its uptrend on August 20 after a bearish reversal, which was followed by a significant move downward. This break was triggered by comments from BOJ board member Takata and echoed those made by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over the weekend.

Takata suggested that the pace of rate hikes should be assessed at every meeting rather than assuming tightening will continue at roughly twice-yearly intervals. He also raised the possibility of consecutive hikes, similar to comments from Bessent on Sunday.

The BOJ's hawkish tone has been a key driver in the market's reaction, with the pair breaking through its uptrend and falling below 159.50. The JGB curve has also bear-flattened sharply, with two-year yields up 6.2bp and five-year yields 5.5bp.

The impact of these comments is uncertain, and it remains to be seen whether they will have a lasting effect on the market. However, the immediate reaction suggests that investors are taking them seriously, at least in the short term.
