USD/JPY Volatility Continues Amid Bank of Japan Policy Divergence
The USD/JPY exchange rate continues to fluctuate around 158, influenced by the divergence in monetary policy between Japan and the United States. The Bank of Japan's internal divergence has weakened support for the yen, while safe-haven demand and hawkish rhetoric from the Federal Reserve have supported the dollar.
According to minutes from the Bank of Japan's monetary policy meeting on July 30-31, committee members held different views on future interest rate policy. Some officials favored maintaining the current policy rate, while others argued that the Bank of Japan should maintain or even accelerate its policy tightening pace.
The widening policy divergence has reduced market expectations for a near-term sharp appreciation of the yen. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar has been supported by safe-haven demand, particularly in light of ongoing tensions in the Middle East and concerns about energy supply security.
