Vance Pushes for Fed Rate Cut Amid Housing Affordability Concerns
Vice President JD Vance has made it clear that the administration is pushing for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates, citing concerns about housing affordability. He stated at a White House press briefing that President Donald Trump's focus on interest rates is primarily driven by his desire to help Americans afford homes.
Vance pointed out that higher interest rates directly increase mortgage costs, which could limit access to affordable housing for many people. The administration believes the current inflation data justifies a rate cut, and Vance described it as 'proper and responsible' for the Fed to take action.
However, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller expressed a different opinion earlier this week, stating that he is prepared to leave the federal funds rate unchanged at the next meeting. He noted that the Fed is already doing its part to keep interest rates down, but would appreciate some help from the central bank.
The current market sentiment suggests that traders are assigning a 66.2% probability to a rate hike at the upcoming Fed meeting, which is in contrast to the administration's stance.
