Venezuela Government and Opposition Unite to Recover Frozen Assets
The Venezuelan government and opposition have agreed to recover billions in frozen assets from the Bank of England and International Monetary Fund.
This landmark breakthrough is a result of US-backed negotiations that have been ongoing for months, with a unified front between the two factions paving the way for the recovery of an estimated $4.5 billion in special drawing rights held by the IMF and approximately 31 tonnes of gold reserves languishing in the Bank of England's vaults.
The frozen assets were inaccessible to Caracas since 2018, with Western courts and financial institutions struggling to determine whether the recognized authority lay with the Maduro administration or the opposition-led interim government.
The agreement stipulates that any recovered capital will be placed into a transparent, internationally monitored trust fund dedicated exclusively to humanitarian relief, healthcare infrastructure, and the stabilization of the national electrical grid.
