Venezuela Seeks $4 Billion Gold Haul Amid Inflation Crisis

Venezuela is turning to its gold reserves held in the Bank of England's vaults as it seeks to rebuild after devastating earthquakes and surging inflation.

The South American nation plans to focus on reconstruction efforts, including rebuilding households, health capacities, and electricity availability, as well as clearing rubble. To achieve this, Venezuelan authorities aim to recover gold reserves worth an estimated $4 billion held in the Bank of England's vaults.

The government has been locked in a long-running legal battle with the Bank of England over the release of 31 metric tons of Venezuelan gold, which is being withheld due to concerns over the legitimacy of President Nicolas Maduro's government. Despite his capture by the U.S. in January and a request from acting President Delcy Rodriguez to King Charles, the bullion remains locked away.
